Small Town USA

Small town USA: Killeen Texas

A couple weeks ago, I told you that Brittanie and I were working on a new feature for the site. Now, I am happy to introduce our new series: Main Street. The idea came after watching and hearing commercials consistently talk about how any small town in America could win a main street makeover. You know ICB is all about small towns and shopping small, so I believe a start on that front would be to highlight the awesome small towns over Texas.

We are starting with my hometown, Killeen. I grew up in Miami and Killeen, but I am a proud graduate of C. E Ellison High School, and I have so many memories in this town. It is were I currently reside when I am not traveling around the US. Most people assume I live in a major city, but I don’t. I plan on eventually moving, but right now, Killeen has my heart.

Dwntn killeenMain streets have so much history. I remember Killeen being beautiful, but now the town is undergoing renovations. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s done.

Killeen is a gorgeous city, and I am excited to see what it looks like in a year when all the construction is finished. There are so many cool things that used to be here, and I always joke that if I won a million dollars, I would jazz up downtown, which is still something on my bucket list. I want to give the city something back.

What do you think of Killeen and our new feature? I can’t wait to share next week’s main street with you!

“…highlight the awesome small towns over Texas … starting with my hometown, Killeen…”

Perhaps a matter of perspective, but I wouldn’t consider Killeen a “small town”. 😉 I’ve lived in Tokyo and San Antonio, so I realize Killeen isn’t a massive urban center, but I’ve also lived in small towns with populations like 8,000 and 4,500 where “going to the city” means driving 30 miles to a town of 30,000.

For me, Killeen is a “medium-sized city”.

I do love your photos. 🙂

I have lived in towns way bigger than killeen. Compared to living in cities with millions this is small. I have lived in towns with 2K people too. So, yes in your terms yes it might be a medium size town but in my terms its a small town. It doesnt have a lot of luxuries big towns have.

I remember when we first got Starbucks in 2006. I remember when we got bank of America. I remember when we only had one movie place. I remember when it was just Killeen and Ellison. My parents actually lived here when it was only Killeen. The town has grown to what it is today =)

I moved here in 2009, so for me it’s always had Starbucks. 😉

That might be the difference: you *remember* it smaller; I’ve never seen it smaller. 🙂

yes two different view points. The city has grown drastically in the last 10 years
