Lessons Learned: Jessica of DSR Apparel

Jessica of DSR Apparel shares her insight on the lessons she has learned thus far on her small business journey.

Several years ago, when I had an online store I decided to put my PR degree to good use by pitching bloggers to cover my boutique. There was a list of over 50 bloggers across the United States that I reached out to for an interview. Jessica of DSR Apparel was one of those bloggers, and since then she has turned into one of my closest friends. She is brilliant beyond a shadow of a doubt, her gif text game is poppin, and she honestly has a passion for what she is doing.

Why did you start your business? I started my business because I love t-shirts and I’ve wanted to own my own t-shirt company for at least the past 12 years.

How long have you been in business? 3 years and 4 months.

Where are you located? Technically, everywhere since I run an online business.  Physically, I’m located in Detroit, MI.

The biggest obstacle when initially launching?  Money.

If you could start all over again what would you do differently? I would stop listening to so many so-called business experts.  There is more than one way to start a business.  What worked for one business owner may not work for me.

What area of the startup do people not provide that much information on that you had to dig deeper for? How hard it is to grow a business.  So many “business” publications lack transparency.  They seem to only tell a very particular type of success story, as opposed to more diverse stories, which tell the good, the bad and the ugly of starting and growing a business.

How much was the initial startup cost for your business? Between $4,000 – $5,000

What is your favorite thing about being your own boss? Being able to share something that I created and am passionate about with others.

Do you have a community that surrounds you? If so, how do you find these amazing people? I do have a small, but passionate community.  I met them through similar interests.

Did you utilize the services of a consultant, ebooks or eCourse when launching? If so, why was it important for you to do this? I utilized a consultant and ebooks.  It was important because it helped me to learn what I didn’t know before I launched.

Where do you see your business 3 years from now?  Earning a high six figures or better, annually.

What advice would you give a new business owner? Read, read and read some more.  You never stop learning.  And don’t take advice from someone who has never been where you’re going.

Favorite resources for small business owners? Books and podcasts.

Which blogs or podcast are you loving right now? The Great Girlfriends, How I Built This with Guy Raz, Believing Bigger with Dr. Shante and Redefining Wealth with Patrice Washington.

How can we support you to help you grow your business? Tell 10 of your best girlfriends about DSR Apparel.
